Why the Succession Series is More Than Just Entertainment

4.6/5 - (8 votes)

Succession is a gripping and intense television series that delves into the ruthless world of the Roy family, owners of one of the biggest media conglomerates in the world. Created by Jesse Armstrong, this show is a powerful exploration of power dynamics, family relationships, and the consequences of greed and ambition.

At the core of Succession are the characters, each of whom is meticulously crafted with a unique personality and motivation. The patriarch of the family, Logan Roy, is a domineering and calculating figure who will do anything to maintain his grip on power. His children, Kendall, Shiv, Roman, and Connor, all vie for their father’s approval and a share of the company, leading to tension and conflict between them.

One of the most striking aspects of Succession is its use of cinematography and editing to heighten the tension and drama. The show’s visual language is sophisticated, with shots that linger on characters’ faces, emphasizing their emotions and internal struggles. The dialogue is razor-sharp, with every word carefully chosen to advance the plot and reveal character.

Another fascinating aspect of Succession is its exploration of the media landscape and how it shapes public perception. The Roy family’s media empire is a reflection of the real-world power and influence that media companies hold, and the show raises important questions about the ethics and morality of this kind of power.

Overall, Succession is a must-watch for anyone interested in the intricacies of family dynamics, corporate power, and the media landscape. With its outstanding writing, direction, and performances, it is one of the most captivating and thought-provoking shows of recent years.

Story in short

I watched the Netflix series called “Succession,” created by Jesse Armstrong. The show follows the Roy family, who are the owners of a massive media and entertainment conglomerate called Waystar Royco. The patriarch of the family, Logan Roy (played by Brian Cox), is getting older, and his children are all jockeying for position to take over the company when he steps down.

The show starts with the Roy family preparing for Logan’s 80th birthday party, which is also going to be a big media event. However, things quickly start to fall apart. Kendall Roy (played by Jeremy Strong), Logan’s second-eldest son, has been struggling with addiction, and his drug use is starting to affect his work. He’s supposed to give a big speech at the party, but he’s so high that he can barely stand.

Meanwhile, Logan’s eldest son, Connor (played by Alan Ruck), is running for President of the United States, but he’s not taken seriously by anyone, including his own family. Logan’s only daughter, Shiv (played by Sarah Snook), is a political consultant who’s been estranged from the family for years, but she’s drawn back in when she sees an opportunity to advance her career.

As the series progresses, we see each of the Roy children jockeying for position and trying to gain their father’s favor. Kendall is struggling to overcome his addiction and prove that he’s capable of running the company. Roman (played by Kieran Culkin), Logan’s youngest son, is brash and arrogant, but he’s also the most creative and innovative of the siblings. And Shiv is trying to navigate the complicated world of politics while also trying to reconcile with her family.

Throughout the series, there are several plot twists and shocking moments that keep the audience on the edge of their seats. One of the biggest twists comes when Kendall betrays his father and tries to take over the company himself. This leads to a bitter feud between father and son, and the rest of the family is forced to take sides.

Overall, “Succession” is a gripping drama that explores the complex dynamics of a wealthy and powerful family. The writing is smart and engaging, and the performances are top-notch. It’s a must-watch for anyone who loves a good family drama with plenty of twists and turns.
